The Diagnosis Process.

The Following is from the facility where Katie was diagnosed.  Her Neuropsychological Evaluation was the turning point to finally, finally understanding what was really going on.
I brought her to the facility and left her for 2 1/2 hours of testing.  The tests varied from discussion with the evaluator to several different activities and 'computer games' .  We waited a month for the dianosis and spent and hour going over the findings.  Prepare to be emotionally exhausted.

Disclaimer-  It took close to six years and four different counselors who couldn't get anywhere with this child before I was able to get her tested.   Girls with Aspergers may seem UNUSUAL or ODD or UNIQUE AND SPECIAL or present with BEHAVIOUR ISSUES or a little behind in EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE or be ADHD, HAVE ODD, or RAD but the key to knowing if there is something more or different is YOUR GUT FEELING and a lack of improvement despite all your efforts to get help.
Maybe the question "REALLY, DR., YOU CAN TELL ME- DO YOU THINK THERE IS SOMETHING WRONG WITH HER/DO YOU THINK SHE'S CRAZY?"  doesn't make me sound like the mother of the year but I asked it several times because nothing else made sense.

Neuropsychological Evaluation

A neuropsychological evaluation is a specialized type of assessment examining the connection between the brain and behavior. Clinicians performing neuropsychological assessments have completed additional training in neuroanatomy, neuroscience, pathology, and several other areas. There has also been advanced coursework and training to evaluate (in greater depth) such domains as: attention, memory, intelligence, language, visual-perception, visual-spatial thinking, psychosensory and motor abilities, “frontal lobe” or executive functions, academic achievement, and personality or emotional functions. Dr. Wolff is Board Certified by the American Board of Pediatric Neuropsychology and Dr. Manor has 15 years experience providing assessments from a neuropsychological perspective.

For a health insurance company to cover the costs of a neuropsychological evaluation, there has to have been an acquired medical illness that may have influenced the development of the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord). This could include a concussion, a fall with a significant strike to the head, an auto accident, seizures, brain tumors, diabetes, high fevers, low oxygen levels, and many other medical diseases that can negatively influence the areas mentioned above. Our neuropsychologists are able to complete any of the evaluations above, and can tailor the testing to each individual based on information learned during the interview and performance during testing.

Neuropsychological evaluations assess brain function in response to:
  • Concussions
  • Head injury/Concussions
  • Cancer/Hematological
  • Seizures
  • Genetics
  • Other Medical Disorders
  • Pre and postsurgical reviews
  • Intellectual
  • Memory
  • Executive Functioning
  • Attention
  • Language
  • Motor
  • Visual Perception
  • Auditory processing
  • etc.
